On March 23, 2024, Painted Brain held "David Byrd Art Experience" at Matthew Brown Gallery in conjunction with David Byrd’s exhibition. Painted Brain is a peer-run mental health organization in Los Angeles, CA. The event included a gallery tour and an immersive experience, looking at the work through the lens of someone who may have experienced some of what Byrd painted. Questions were asked. What has changed and stayed the same in mental health care? What do passages from Byrd's book tell us about Byrd, the patients, and the system of care at that time, 1958–88? What does the future hold for mental health care?
